Since the beginning of the 21st century, the international community has faced numerous security challenges, including unstoppable waves of migration, Islamic radicalism, and terrorist threats, a series of economic and social crises, and escalating conflicts with a tendency to evolve into a global, world war. However, the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by infection from the previously unknown severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has presented unprecedented and unique challenges to the global society.
