In the early morning of February 24th of 2022 Ukrainians and the rest of Europe woke up in a shocking realization that the Russian army had launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Russian forces encroached on Ukraine from three directions - advancing on the capital Kyiv from Belarus and Russian territory north from Ukrainian cities of Sumy and Chernihiv. In eastern Ukraine the Russians had advanced from territories of the self-proclaimed independent republics of Luhansk and Donetsk westwards. In the south the Russians had launched on allout assault from Crimea that had been occupied by Russia from March 2014, advancing into the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
